stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A covey suddenly flushes another hundred yards uphill, crosses a canyon, and lands on the exact ridge you were hoping you would not have to climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is chukar hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few upland birds are so closely tied to difficult terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chukar thrive on dry, rocky slopes, rimrock, canyon walls, cheatgrass hillsides, talus, and steep country where hunters quickly discover that finding birds is only part of the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaching them is the other half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A successful chukar hunter learns to read elevation, water, food, sun exposure, slope direction, wind, and escape terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More importantly, the hunter learns not to chase every bird straight uphill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chukar are better climbers than you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not beating them at climbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is understanding where they want to go before they get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chukar Country Is Usually Obvious\u2014But Birds Are Not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chukar habitat often looks exactly like the kind of country most people would rather avoid walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Productive areas can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rocky canyon walls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rimrock<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Broken shale slopes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cheatgrass-covered hills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sparse sage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry creek systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Steep benches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basalt class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A smooth grassy hillside may look easier to hunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A broken slope with rock bands and scattered vegetation may hold far more birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chukar survive by staying close to terrain that gives them an advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water Is One of the Best Starting they run when disturbed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chukar Often Travel Vertically<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many upland birds move mainly across relatively flat ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chukar regularly move up and down slopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Feed lower in the morning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move toward water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climb into rocky security cover<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loaf on benches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel along contour
